Annual pride demonstrations and marches commemorating the Stonewall Riot continued in most major cities across the United States and around the world through the 1980s and most of the 1990s, culminating in the official proclamation of June as 'Gay and Lesbian Pride Month' by President Bill Clinton in 19. By 1972 participating cities included Boston, Dallas, Milwaukee, London, Paris, West Berlin, Stockholm, Atlanta, Buffalo, Detroit, Washington, D.C., Miami, and Philadelphia. The following year, on June 27 and 28 marches took place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. Meeting several months later, in Philadelphia, members of the Eastern Regional Conference of Homophile Organizations (ERCHO) proposed an annual march in New York to commemorate what was then termed Christopher Street Liberation Day. On Jtransgender, lesbian, gay, and bisexual people, including many people of color, rioted following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar on Christopher Street in New York City.
